Cyclone Vulnerability Assessment of Tamil Nadu Coast, India Using Remote Sensing and GIS Techniques
Abstract:
The Tamil Nadu coast has been experiencing frequent cyclone disasters which claim significant losses and damages. It is very important to reduce the damages and losses from the impact of severe cyclones in this coastal zone, which can be achieved by integrating cyclone vulnerability zone map and appropriate coastal zone management plan. Therefore, in the present study mapping of cyclone vulnerability zone on 1:50000 scale along the Tamil Nadu coast has been carried out using Remote Sensing and GIS techniques with the four physical parameters, namely elevation, wind speed, historical cyclone event, and land use/land cover. The Weighted Sum Model (WSM) has been used to integrate the above parameters to achieve the cyclone vulnerability zone map. The cyclone vulnerability zone map has been divided into five cyclone vulnerability category, namely (i) very high, (ii) high, (iii) moderate, (iv) low, and (v) very low. The entire northern coastal taluks comes under very high cyclone vulnerability zone whereas central and southern coastal taluks falls under high to low cyclone vulnerability zone. The information provided with the present study would help coastal administrator, managers, or researchers in advanced planning to minimize cyclone associated losses and reduce threats to future coastal development.
