Segmentation of Playa Geomorphological Facies in Desert Regions, Using Integrated Remote Sensing and Statistical Modeling of Soil Properties
The paper presents a method to segment geomorphological Playa facies, using statistical modelling and satellite image processing, based on a case study in Iran. Topsoil randomly-selected samples were collected to date of the ASTER imageries. Band ratios, principal component analysis, vegetation and salinity indices have been used to produce transformed data set from the original DN, the Radiance, and the reflectance products. Using stepwise regression method, the models were established between the measures and the digital values, derived from the lab analysis and extracted from the images, respectively. A novel method of variable aggregation has been developed by simple summing and geometric averaging of the soil factors. The models have been validated using 5 criteria, and then, the best models run on the images. Finally, the outputs were segmented to the maps of the Playa facies, followed by accuracy assessment. For EC and pH, present total soil characteristics, the models present better correlations. The method results accurate segmentation maps 10 to 20% more than using the soil factor, individually. Apart from the moderate statistical results, the models could be considered as good rough estimators of soil properties for natural resources management.
